Group Therapy & Workshops
Group therapy can be even more powerful than individual counseling for learning intimacy skills and learning to receive support from people who struggle with similar life challenges. Therapy groups are a great addition to individual counseling and sometimes a more appropriate way to work on relationship challenges.
I often recommend group therapy to those who cannot afford to do individual counseling yet want to develop the skills and tools to achieve their goals for healing and wholeness. For more information about the beneftis of group therapy, please visit my website http://www.sacramentogrouptherapy.com I am a nationally certified group psychotherapist and have had 25 years of experience in facilitating all kinds of groups. Supervision and Consultation Groups for MFT and LCSW Interns and Newly Licensed Therapists: An ongoing group for MFT Interns, LCSW Interns, LPCC Interns, and newly licensed MFTs, LPCCs and LCSWs takes place at my downtown Davis office on Thursdays from 11 am until 1 pm. The group provides a supportive, confidential way for interns to receive BBS supervision hours towards licensure. The group offers case consultation, mindfulness practices instruction, working through counter-transference, review of legal and ethical issues, and information for creating a successful private practice without needing to take insurance. Cost is $25 per session. Therapy Groups for Therapists and Interns: Two therapy groups for Therapists and Therapy Interns will soon be offered: Sacramento: Mondays 10:30 a.m.-12:00; Davis: either Tuesdays from 6:30-8:00 p.m., or Fridays 10:30 a.m. -12:00. Groups provide safe place to process personal and professional relationship challenges, counter-transference, and to learn and use mindfulness-based ways to connect with self and others in group. I offer clients two different psychotherapy groups and one free of charge spiritual support group. See group descriptions, below. Relationship Skills Group: This group is an ongoing, weekly therapy group for adult men and women who wish to experience deeper and more fulfilling relationships. Group members explore new ways of authentically relating from their heart as they deepen their capacity for trust and intimacy with others. I help group members explore within the group how to effectively relate from their hearts and not end up feeling abandoned or not good enough. I offer this group at my Davis office on Tuesdays from 6:30-8 pm.
Consider joining this group if you want to be yourself in relationships but you find this difficult because of one or more of the following: (1) you aren't sure who you are when you are "authentic"; (2) you are afraid that if you really open up and expose your full self, others will abandon or reject you; (3) you find that you tend to share too much about yourself too soon; (4) you aren't clear about when to hold back and when to share more deeply with your partner or with friends; (5) you want to learn and practice clear communication and self-expression; (6) you find that you make inaccurate assumptions about others at first that later prove false.
Self Discovery Group: Transforming the Shadow Within:
This group is for adult men and women who are interested in exploring unconscious motivations (the "shadow" self), and ways in which the ego maintains its hold on us. We use dreamwork, group energy therapy techniques, the Enneagram (a tool to understand the personality self), Byron Katie's "the Work," and other techniques to help clear mental and emotional patterning. We explore teachings about manifestation and teachings about how we project (make false assumptions about) our issues onto others and onto the world. Group members give and receive support as they work together to deepen their self-understanding and to connect with their soul-wisdom and inner guidance. Group meets at my Sacramento office on Wednesdays from 6:00-8:00 p.m. A few slots in group are open. See testimonials below from previous group members: “I joined Deborah's 12 week group for two sessions. Although we all led different lifestyles, had different family constellations, varied ages, we came to realize that our issues were quite the same. We worked through some old worn out issues (shadows) that kept getting in our way in our current life, in a very safe supportive environment. We learned some fun, empowering ways to support ourselves and let go of old wounds. Wednesday night group became a time that we could count on to let down, gain insight, be supported and always leave feeling empowered. Deborah provided a "presence" that created a safe cohesive experience.” MA ______________________________ “The group provided me with insight and support as I deepened my spiritual experience. The women in the group were inspirational to me on all levels. Hearing others struggles and challenges allowed me to feel more connected to our universal experience of oneness.” D _______________________________ “I now have a tool kit of skills and techniques for dealing with shadow, as well as a greater understanding of what shadow is and how it manifests in my life. Additionally, the group provided me with a trusted cadre of like-minded women to support and gain support from. I was continually astonished at how we were often struggling with the same issues at the same time, even though we are all very different people at different places in our lives. I have a greater sense of how we are all connected in this great awakening because of this group.” M ___________________________ 1. “Learned to value myself. 2. Learned ways to change the way I approach difficult or uncomfortable situations. 3. Experienced the extraordinary power that a group of women hold when they are joining in a spiritual setting. 4. Found new deeper levels of meditation. 5. Loved laughing with the other women about the ways we are so alike. 6. Helped me not be so serious about my perceived shortcomings. and probably a couple hundred other positive concepts, emotions, skills. Most of all, I loved, absolutely loved, making the connection with the women who came each week. Having the support of those women, including Deborah as facilitator, was profound and incredibly supportive for me. Knowing one is loved by others despite our flaws was wonderful.” K ____________________________ “I had no idea what "shadow" was when I started attending your class. I had been attending Deborah’s Saturday monthly classes, and was being exposed to spiritual ideas which were both familiar and new to me. The Wednesday night meetings gave me tools to delve further into understanding myself and to understand how I hamper my own personal growth. It was a safe environment in which I could explore and share, and perhaps even help others. Deborah is a gifted teacher, and being in the group was very enlightening. Thank you!” S _________________________ “This group was an incredibly safe and supportive experience to both begin and continue the process of identifying, understanding, and embracing my shadow aspects. It was deeply healing and made possible a deepening of spirituality that I had yearned for. It also created a community of lovely, spiritually-oriented women also committed to evolving consciousness, all of us learning so much from one another. It changed my life in big and small ways! I am so grateful to Deborah for this heart-opening group experience!” MR _________________________ “I’d like to tell people who are seriously interested in personal growth and expansion, as I am, that the several weeks I spent in Deborah’s Shadow group was more than I ever hoped for. I am a person who has been in groups and therapy for years looking to open to all that I could possibly be in this lifetime. I was looking for a support group where others could really listen and help me unearth those deep thoughts and feelings I had long ago forgotten. Others in the group offered insights into places I didn’t previously look. As a result, I made quantum leaps in areas I was willing to explore. I am more accepting of who I am – warts and all.” D Free Awakening to Spirit Groups in Sacramento and Davis:
This is a free spiritual exploration group that meets in Sacramento the first Saturday morning of each month and in Davis the third Saturday of each month. People can come to either or both group gatherings. If you are interested in exploring the teachings of Eckhart Tolle, Byron Katie, Wayne Dyer, Deepak Chopra, Louise Hay, Pema Chodron, Adyashanti, Gangaji, and other leading-edge spiritual teachers, the group will likely be a fit for you. The main spiritual teacher whose teachings we explore is Leslie Temple Thurston. Group members learn her tools and techniques for "transcending" the ego. By "transcending" I mean to become non-attached from your ego as well as being able to witness the ego neutrally and without judgment. (Another way of saying this is to move beyond the limitations of your life's "story.")
The group sessions include support for your spiritual practice, group meditation, the use of tools that alleviate suffering and provide inner peace, and practices for connecting with the "neutral witness." Sacramento group meets on first Saturday of each month from 10 am - noon. Davis group meets the third Saturday of each month from 10 am to noon. Deborah's Workshops:
I offer periodic weekend workshops and retreats on the topics of "Finding your Life's Purpose", "Dream Work for the Soul", Self Hypnosis for Chronic Pain," and on "Eating Disorders Recovery."
I also offer talks and trainings at conferences and workshops.
